Road safety isn’t just about avoiding accidents; it’s about being proactive in creating safer roads for everyone. Whether you're a driver, pedestrian, or cyclist, adopting the right habits can save lives. Here are five essential habits every road user should practice.

  1. Always Use Your Seatbelt
Many still overlook this simple habit, yet it’s one of the most effective ways to reduce injury during accidents. It’s not just for the driver—passengers need seatbelts too.

Tip: Make a habit of buckling up before even starting the engine.

  1. Stay Within Speed Limits
In a rush? It’s tempting to speed, but speed limits exist for a reason. Driving too fast reduces reaction time and increases the severity of accidents. Be mindful of your surroundings—especially in residential areas or near schools.

Tip: Commit to being patient on the road. It could save a life.

  1. Keep Your Vehicle in Check
Proper maintenance prevents accidents. Regularly check your tires, brakes, and lights. A well-maintained vehicle is less likely to cause or be involved in accidents.

Tip: Schedule monthly car inspections, even for minor details like fluid levels and tire pressure.

  1. Never Drive Distracted
Texting while driving is a serious problem. Even a glance at your phone can have disastrous consequences. Focus fully on the road, and leave the texting for when you’re parked.

Tip: Put your phone in ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode while driving.

  1. Respect Pedestrians and Cyclists
They are the most vulnerable road users. Always yield to them at crosswalks and give cyclists plenty of room. These small acts of consideration can prevent accidents and save lives.

Tip: Learn to anticipate the actions of pedestrians and cyclists, especially in busy areas.

By adopting these everyday habits, we can reduce the number of road accidents and make Nigerian roads safer. At the Road Users Academy, we’re committed to educating and empowering road users. Explore our courses to learn more about safe road practices and vehicle maintenance.
